OVERVIEW

Reimagining a movie discovery platform as a mobile app that filters by 'vibe'.

Conventional siloed algorithms filters provide a universal way to navigate movie discovery, yet fail to support moments when users know what they feel, and not what to watch.

THE PROBLEM

'Netflix Syndrome' makes users spend more time choosing content than watching it, resulting in decision fatigue and action drop-offs.

Most users enter streaming platforms without a clear goal.

Browsing large content libraries quickly leads to decision fatigue.

Users spend significant time searching but often still fail to choose.

DISCOVERY

Users don’t decide what to watch based on logic, but emotion.

Me

I want to watch a movie that makes me feel… alive!

Discovery Platform

Here's a list of recommendations for comedy…

Me

??!

I'm so overwhelmed by these options that aren't even filtered accurately!

Insight

Emotional value drives time tolerance.

Without it, frustration and decision fatigue arises quickly.

3 DESIGN PRINCIPLES

1

Start with emotions.

Intuitive selection of moods is an easier entry point than selecting a genre.

What do you want to feel like?

But how do we define Moods and Vibes?

Users were asked to describe the feelings they wanted to feel from a movie in the moment. Their vocabulary was collected into a word cloud that helped categorise 7 main moods, each with their designated combination of "vibe tags".

2

Reduce decision fatigue.

Generating fewer options for users to choose from

reduces cognitive load and decisive friction.

TEST & ITERATION

User-tested prototypes

Overlooked optional filters hidden behind small icons.

Users needed additional context to confidently make a choice.

Confusing results presentation.

Clarified mood selection with descriptions.

Contextualised movie results with summaries and vibe tags.

Result card presentation remains confusing.

Polish

Softened corners and edges to create a more approachable visual language.

Refined the recommendation card layout to improve readability, usability, and visual hierarchy.

Introduced organic shapes and warm gradients to reinforce the emotion-led experience.

The idea of mood colour association started to bloom here.

Brand Identity for 'Moodi'

01

A cinematic, colour-focussed, and emotion-led mood board inspired the branding.

02

Each mood was assigned a distinct gradient language to reinforce emotional recognition.

03

Moodi was imagined as a TV mascot to build brand recognition and create a more companion-like experience.
